Samoëns: Undoubtedly one of the best ski resorts in France

Whether you’re new to the ski environment or a seasoned skier/snowboarder, Samoëns is undoubtedly one of the best value French resorts. When you opt for a winter ski holiday or summer mountain break in this pretty town, it’s not only affordable but also offers a genuine taste of French life and magnificent views of Mont Blanc. What more could you ask? Well, you may be wondering about the slopes and what the town and surrounding areas are like.

Skiing in Samoëns

Just an hour’s drive from Geneva Airport, the town of Samoëns is renowned for its brilliant, north-facing ski slopes. The longest local ski run (approx 14km) is the Blue route from Grandes Platières to Sixt, passing by beautiful Lac de Gers. You’ll discover a total of 265km of piste in the region, which encompasses the resorts of Samoens, Flaine, Sixt, Morillon and Les Carroz. With so many popular resorts in the area, there are plenty of runs and pistes to suit the expert ski enthusiast right down to novices and kids.

The only potential drawback that could possibly give some cause for concern is that Samoëns doesn’t offer visitors the opportunity to ski directly back into town. It’s necessary to hop on the ski bus or take the telecabin. One option is to ski back into Morillon and take the ski bus from there to Samoëns, a trip of around ten minutes.

What makes Samoëns so special then?

Samoëns is traditionally home to a variety of artisan stonemasons. The village has a beautiful, historic centre, and is also the location for the only botanic garden in the Alps which was established in the year 1906. The town’s central square and main street house a variety of gourmet shops, selling locally-produced mountain hams and cheeses, along with delicious breads, cakes and savouries from local patisseries.

This resort may not be one of the favoured ski destinations for Brits, but certainly is for the French. This means that you can be sure all your local produce, purchases, and meals out will be more affordable than at resorts such as Val d’Isere.
